Yellow Cab and Taxis Fiesta award $15,000 in scholarships

HOUSTON, TX (July 3, 2007) Yellow Cab and Taxis Fiesta, Houston’s only computer-dispatched taxi fleets, have announced the recipients of the 3rd annual company scholarships. The ten $1,500 scholarship awards may be used for college or technical school training and are awarded to the children of independent contractor drivers at Yellow Cab and Yellow Cab employees. The drivers and employees themselves are also eligible. As part of the application process, the candidate writes an essay about the impact that the scholarship would have on his or her education. Applications are judged based on essays, transcripts and financial needs.

“Education is key to developing personal and professional potential,” said Robert Rugg, President of Yellow Cab. “It is gratifying to give back to the independent contractor drivers and employees by helping their children pursue their dreams.” Roman Martinez, President of Taxis Fiesta, added, “We are proud to support the education of such a promising group of individuals.” Here is a brief look at some of this year’s recipients:

Kantoa K Anene is currently a student at University of Texas at San Antonio, majoring in architecture.  He is the son of Kafomoi Anene, who has supported his family for 18 years as an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab.

Cinthia Gonzalez is a recent graduate of Houston’s Challenge Early College High School. She will attend HCC in ’07-’08 and then plans to transfer to UTSA to complete her degree in business law with a focus on finance. Her father, Julio Gonzalez, has been an independent contractor driver at Taxis Fiesta for 9 years.

Olufikayo Adewunmi is attending Texas Women’s University at the Houston Campus. Her long-term goal is to become a nurse. Her father, Bamidele Adewunmi, has been an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab since 2004.

Jimmy Vongsaly is an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab. He is in his senior year at the University of Houston, where he is majoring in business with a focus on entrepreneurship and sales.

Mike Moscatello is currently a student at Hendrix College. His father, Joseph Moscatello, has worked in the Yellow Cab body shop for 26 years.

Devon Wade has worked as a Yellow Cab call taker for about a year. His grandfather has been an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab for more than 20 years. A recent graduate of M.B. Smiley High School, Devon will major in sociology with a concentration in criminology at Louisiana State University this fall. Devon hopes to become an FBI agent.

Ryan C Yep, is a liberal arts major at the University of Texas at Austin with the goal of attending law school. Ryan’s father, customer service manager Harding Yep, has worked at Yellow Cab for 25 years.

Kevin Packman is a recent graduate of Spring High School. This fall, he will begin his freshman year at Texas A&M University, majoring in animal science. His father, Jerry Packman, is the body shop manager at Yellow Cab.
