“Six in the City”: Houston introduces maximum $6 flat rate
for all taxi rides within the downtown Central Business District.

HOUSTON (Nov. 29, 2006) -- The City of Houston Transportation Department has created a flat rate of $6 for taxi rides that originate and end within the Central Business District. Up to four passengers can share a cab ride and the cost of the $6 fare.

The new downtown flat rate is being promoted as “Six in the City," and increases downtown transportation options. It applies to single pick-up, one-drop off trips within the Central Business District, which is bounded by I-45, I-10 and US 59.

To promote awareness of the great deal the City has created for downtown travelers, Yellow Cab has donated 100 mobile billboards advertising the “Six in the City” fare. The billboards are mounted on the backs of taxis that travel throughout the Greater Houston area at all hours of the day and night.

“We’re very pleased with the Houston City Council’s decision to amend the taxi fare ordinance,” said Yellow Cab President Robert Rugg. “A flat fare for downtown trips will encourage people to choose taxi service instead of struggling with downtown traffic and parking challenges. We believe that the "Six in the City" program will attract more business to downtown restaurants and stores.”
