Greater Houston Transportation company Awards $18,000 in Scholarships

Money Given To Help Students Realize Their Dreams

HOUSTON (June 2, 2005) – Greater Houston Transportation Company and its affiliated companies, Houston’s only computer-dispatched taxi fleet, recently held a scholarship ceremony and announced the recipients of its new scholarship program for family members of its independent contractor drivers and staff at Yellow Cab Houston, Taxis Fiesta and United Cab.

The scholarship ceremony, which included cake and refreshments, took place on Wednesday, May 25, at the Greater Houston Transportation company headquarters, 1406 Hays Street, with family and friends in attendance.

“We are excited to be able to contribute to our employees and their families with these scholarships,” said Raymond Turner, president of Greater Houston Transportation Company.  “Education is the key to a young person’s future, and we hope this is the beginning of a long tradition of support for the education of the children of our independent contractors and employees.”

The scholarship recipients, including zip codes, are as follows:  Sarah Hanrath (77339), Gordon and Marcella Hagger (77022), Daryl Ibeneme (77584), Anene Kantoa (77077), Megan Loveall (77532), Steven, Vanessa, and James Soria (77041), Kathleen Watson (77493), Ryan Yep (77040) and Sixto Zamarripa (77338).

The scholarships awarded by Greater Houston Transportation Company may be used for college or for training at a technical school. To meet eligibility requirements, at least one parent must be an independent contractor driver in good standing with six months of current tenure at Yellow Cab, Taxis Fiesta or United Cab, or be an employee of one of these companies. The student applicants also wrote a 2,000 word essay on why the scholarship is important to them and provided their high school transcripts.

The scholarship applicants were judged by a special committee comprised of executives of Greater Houston Transportation Company. Further, the applicants were judged based on their essay entry and on their financial need.

In addition, these 12 scholarship recipients have the opportunity to work as summer interns in the sales and marketing departments.
