The Container Store CEO to Speak at Neuhaus Education Center’s Annual Business Forum
Yellow Cab sponsors forum to bridge business community and Neuhaus Education Center
March 27, 2006, HOUSTON, TX- The Neuhaus Education Center, a non-profit education foundation, presents The Container Store CEO, Garrett Boone at their annual Business Forum, a bridge building event between Neuhaus corporate donors and the business community. The event will take place at the River Oaks Country Club on Tuesday, May 2 at 6:00 p.m.
This year’s Business Forum features the emerging role of business in public education. Boone will speak on The Container Store concept of retaining and training employees, keeping employees educated to keep up with changing business and consumer needs.
Garrett Boone has over twenty years of retail experience. This commitment to maintaining The Container Store’s unique culture has played a vital role in the company being selected by Fortune Magazine as the “Best Company to Work For” for seven consecutive years. In addition, in early 2006 Garrett was inducted into the Retailing Hall of Fame.
Local businesses have also invested in human capital. “Last year Yellow Cab launched an initiative with HISD in which we adopted two middle schools, McReynolds and Fleming, and installed new computer labs for reading and math and provided additional teacher training at the schools. The effects have been great.” explains Roman Martinez, Executive VP, Community Affairs, Texas Taxis, parent company of Yellow Cab. “We require our management team to mentor two middle school students. We find that having this project benefits our employees almost as much as it does the HISD students. We want to encourage other businesses to reap the rewards of investing in education.”
Yellow Cab believes that it is the responsibility of business to support education. By launching an initiative in Houston Independent School District middle schools, providing professional development for teachers, donating computers to establish labs for math and reading, and requiring management employees to serve as mentors for young learners, Yellow Cab is paving the way for a strong and successful work force in the future and making the connection between good business and good education. HISD is the seventh largest school district in the nation with approximately 210,000 students.
