HOUSTON (Jan. 19, 2006) Yellow Cab, Houston’s leading taxi fleet, finished first in its support of the 2006 Chevron Houston Marathon. As part of Yellow Cab Cares program, the company and its dedicated team members worked with race officials on publicity and pace cars, sponsored the cross-country team from Bellaire High School and hosted a fun-filled cheering and runner encouragement party on the day of the race.
In its second-year of support of the Chevron Houston Marathon, Yellow Cab worked closely with the organization, using 50 of its Yellow Cab taxis as “mobile billboards,” to promote the race and encourage race participation. Two of Yellow Cab’s promotional vehicles, the H1 Hummer and the Yellow Cab Mini-Cooper, were in the George R. Brown Convention Center as exhibits at the Marathon Expo, which was held the Friday and Saturday before the races. In addition, Yellow Cab Houston’s H1 Hummer served as the “Official Pace Car” which led the runners through Houston to the finish line. And if that was not enough, the taxi company also hosted a cheering section called “Go Team Yellow” on the race course where their employees, families and guests shouted encouragement to the runners, waved pom-poms and supported the runners.
New in 2006, Yellow Cab's sponsorship of several students from Bellaire High School included paying entry fees for the team and providing the participants with special marathon jerseys. Ten athletes from the school, including cross-country coach Brett Hervat, ran the race.
“Yellow Cab is glad to support local schools and students,” said Raymond Turner, president of Texas Taxi, the parent company of Yellow Cab Houston. “Yellow Cab’s marathon partnership with Bellaire High School is just one of the many ways that we support education within the Greater Houston area, providing volunteer time and donations as well as other items that are of importance.”
The Bellaire High School partnership comes as one of a series of sponsorships and donations to local schools. Yellow Cab, along with its sister company Taxis Fiesta, has made donations to McReynolds Middle School, Fleming Middle School and the HISD Foundation. Further, employees from the two taxi companies regularly mentor eighth-graders from McReynolds Middle School.
Support of the Chevron Houston Marathon was part of Yellow Cab/Taxis Fiesta Cares, a program that provides charitable dollars, taxi advertising, employee volunteer time and other resources to local charities and companies. Yellow Cab's vast community involvement ranges from working with local charities and events, including the Houston Police Foundation, the HISD Foundation, Child Advocates, Inc., Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure, and Fiestas Patrias. Yellow Cab/Taxis Fiesta Cares has also created programs such as annual scholarships, mentoring partnerships with local schools, underwriting local youth athletic events and building community awareness campaigns concerning drinking and driving.
