HOUSTON (August 25 2006) Yellow Cab and its sister companies United Cab and Metro Sedan Service announced today that three of its independent contractor drivers were named finalists for the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association’s Driver of the Year Award. More than 150,000 drivers nationwide were eligible to be nominated for the award.
“We are honored that Mae Rogers, Roosevelt Williams, Jr., and Paul Wegman have been nominated for this prestigious award,” said Robert Rugg, president of Yellow Cab. “They have been recognized in the company for their outstanding service and safe driving, and being nominated for this award by the TLPA is the ultimate form of praise.”
Mae Rogers has been a driver with Metro Sedan Service for more than 4 years. She got the idea to join the company from her sister, Debra Davis, who has been driving with Metro Sedan Service for more than 10 years. Ms. Rogers enjoys the freedom of driving and being able to meet different people everyday. She especially appreciates the opportunity to help people who are unable to drive due to their medical conditions. She has two children: Brandon and Tremeon.
Roosevelt Williams, Jr. became a cab driver at United Cab more than 30 years ago. At that time, he was working at a local supermarket where one week’s worth of wages equaled the amount he made in one day at United Cab. Mr. Williams says a top perk of his profession is the ability to determine when and where he drives. Roosevelt has five children: Timothy, Rita, Vivian, Stephanie and Alicia.
Paul Wegman has been a driver for Yellow Cab for more than 11 years and enjoys the independence and the flexibility that he derives from being his own boss. He initially became a Yellow Cab driver when he was in between jobs. After a short while in the business, Wegman decided that the profession fit him perfectly. A father of three, he enjoys hunting and watching all of Houston’s sports franchises.
The TLPA’s Driver of the Year Award recipient is chosen by a panel of judges that look for the following criteria:
· Years of driving experience;
· Reputable driving record;
· Excellent passenger relations; and
· Positive management feedback.
The TLPA will announce the winner of the award on Oct. 9 during the TLPA’s 88th Annual Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas.
