Houston (June 25, 2008) – Yellow Cab has received a business of the year award from the Texas State Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) in recognition of the company’s commitment and effort to hire qualified applicants with disabilities.

DARS presented the award to Yellow Cab on Wednesday, June 25, at an informational brunch hosted by the Houston Mayor’s Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities.

Communications Director Tomas Smith accepted the award on behalf of Yellow Cab. “In 2004, while working as Communications Manager at our sister company in Austin, Texas, Tomas hired the company’s first visually-impaired call taker.” said GHTC president Robert Rugg.  “Thanks to adaptive technology and guidance from the Texas State Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, the company now routinely employs qualified call takers who are visually impaired.”

“Tomas and his team here in Houston worked very hard to make modifications to our computer dispatching equipment and our workplace in order to support employees who are visually impaired,” said Mr. Rugg. “It is fitting that he receive the recognition for a job well done.”

“Considering the size of our fellow award recipients (Moody Gardens Resort, the Westin Galleria Hotel and FedEx) relative to our own small, locally owned company, this is quite an achievement,” noted Mr. Rugg, who brought a contingent of employees to the brunch to celebrate.
